New ֱBoard of Trustees Appointments

Florida Gov. Rick Scott has appointed Malcolm J. Dorman, M.D. and reappointed Abdol Moabery to the ֱBoard of Trustees.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott has appointed Malcolm J. Dorman, M.D. and reappointed Abdol Moabery to the ֱ Board of Trustees. Dr. Dorman succeeds Julius “Butch” Teske, Ph.D., who has served on the Board since 2011. Both terms are scheduled to end in 2021. ֱStudent Government (SG) President Michael Cairo also has joined the Board until May 2017.

Abdol MoaberyMoabery, who has served on the Board since 2011, is president and chief executive officer of GA Telesis LLC, a global leader in commercial aerospace. He and his wife, Cathy, are also philanthropists of various organizations, including His House Children’s Home; Kids in Distress; Florence Fuller Child Development Center; Food for the Poor; the ISTAT Foundation; the Factor Foundation; and the March of Dimes. Moabery serves on the ֱStadium Leadership Committee, is president of the Wings Club Scholarship Fund and serves as an adviser to several national and local children’s charities. An honorably discharged veteran from the U.S. Navy and U.S. Naval Reserve, Moabery attended FAU. 

"I am honored to be re-appointed to the ֱ Board of Trustees,” said Moabery. “Over the past 25 years, I have watched this amazing institution grow at an exciting pace. I look forward to continuing to serve the ֱcommunity.”

Dr. Dorman is a world-renowned heart surgeon, specializing in minimally invasive mitral valve repair and aortic valve surgery. Previously, he practiced at JFK Medical Center and was medical director of cardiac surgery and medical director of the Valvular Heart Institute, which he established at JFK Medical Center. He served at Miami Heart Institute as chairman of cardiothoracic surgery and co-chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine. The Palm Beach County Medical Society named Dr. Dorman “Physician Hero of the Year” in 2011. Currently, he is a clinical professor in the Department of Surgery at Nova Southeastern University and sits on the ֱCharles E. Schmidt College of Medicine advisory board. Dr. Malcolm Dorman

"It is an honor to serve on the ֱ Board of Trustees,” said Dr. Dorman. “I look forward to working with my fellow board members, administration and faculty to help ensure ֱachieves continued success and remains one of the top-performing universities in the state.”

Cairo is a junior at ֱstudying finance with the goal of becoming an attorney. Cairo has served in FAU’s SG for three years and he has been involved in several different projects and initiatives. He has served in the Boca Raton House of Representatives as police liaison, campus action chairman, and speaker pro-tempore.

“I am humbled and honored to be entrusted with such a great responsibility by the student body to sit on the Board of Trustees, and to share with them the true voice of the student body,” said Cairo. “It is my duty to aid in the advancement of this university at this level by advocating for the best interests of the student body as a whole at all times.”

FAU’s Board of Trustees are a 13-member group responsible for cost-effective policy decisions appropriate to the University’s mission, the implementation and maintenance of high-quality education programs, the measurement of performance, the reporting of information and the provision of input regarding state policy, budgeting and education standards.
