Seventeen Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College students were awarded scholarships for summer internships at Scripps Florida, a division of The Scripps Research Institute; Max Planck Florida Institute and ֱJupiter. This is the second summer the Wilkes Honors College has awarded the scholarships to support research collaborations between the three institutions while encouraging students to be future leaders of the scientific community.

Scholarship winners were selected based on their research interests, planned projects and post-graduate plans. Scholarship recipient Trina Rudeski, who is interning at Max Planck in the Department of Digital Neuroanatomy, is passionate about the field of neuroscience and learning how the human brain processes information. She said she is grateful for the incredible opportunity to study and learn techniques from leading neuroscientists at Max Planck.

Scholarship recipient Michael Rohr is conducting research in the Department of Molecular Therapeutics at the Scripps Research Institute. He said the research opportunities presented at the Wilkes Honors College were what attracted him to the school. After he receives his undergraduate degree, Rohr plans to attend medical school and pursue a Ph.D. in biochemistry.

“The close proximity to both Max Planck and the Scripps Research Institutes on FAU’s Wilkes Honors College campus was one of the reasons I chose to attend the school,” said Rohr.

The Wilkes Honors College offers a number of advantages for students who seek out undergraduate research opportunities. Its unique living and learning curriculum encourages independent research along with the location of the college that provides students close proximity to three leading research institutes within the community.
